Audra is a unique artist with regard to the scope and range of her skills as a performer and song writer. Audra McDonald, who won the prestigious six Tony Awards in a row and two Grammy Awards in 2015 was recognized as one of Times magazine's 100 Most Influential People. President Barack Obama also awarded her the National Medal of Arts -- America's highest honour for achievements in this field. Because of her stunning soprano's tone and unbeatable ability of telling compelling stories her success has been evident on Broadway and in the opera, as well as on television and film. Her career has been successful in concert and recording performing regularly in some of the most prestigious venues around the globe. McDonald was raised in a musically inclined family in Fresno, CA. She was a classical singer who received instruction from her school, the Juilliard School of New York. She won her debut Tony Award in 1994 for the best performance of the Featured Actress in a musical, Carousel which was staged at Lincoln Center Theater. The following four years, she also won another two Tony Awards under the featured actress category. They were awarded in recognition of her Broadway performances of Terrence McGally's play Master Class and Ragtime. In 2004, she received the fourth Tony for her performance in the role she played alongside Sean Diddy Combs in A Raisin in the Sun. Then in 2012, when she was the lead actress for the role of Porgy and Bess in The Gershwins Porgy and Bess she won the fifth Tony and also won her first prize in the lead actor category. One of the Tony Awards most-decorated performer in 2014 was Billie Holiday, who she was as the title character in Lady Day At Emerson's Bar & Grill. This is identical to the role she performed in her 2017 West End London debut for which she has been nominated for an Olivier Award. She also set the record for having the most awards received by a single actor. McDonald's credits in theater include The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (993) Henry IV (2004) and 110 in the Shade (707). Twelfth Night was McDonald's Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park debut. Shuffle Along is The Making of the Musical Seduction in 1921 and the Drama That Followed. Frankie Johnny on the Clair de Lune. and Ohio State Murders. McDonald was introduced to the public via television for her dramatic performance in Peabody Award winning CBS's Having Our Say the Delany Sisters first 100 years. Following her appearance with Kathy Bates, Victor Garber and other actors in the highly acclaimed Disney/ABC remake of Annie in 1999, McDonald appeared as a recurring character on NBC's Law & Order Special Victims Unit. McDonald's Emmy-nominated performance as Emma Thompson on Mike Nichols' HBO film adaptation of Pulitzer Prize winner Wit was written by Mike Nichols. McDonald's return to network television came in 2003 in which she co-starred with Josh Brolin in Mister Sterling. The Bedford Diaries, a WB television show that premiered in 2006. Then she had a recurring part on NBC's Kidnapped within the next year. McDonald was awarded an fourth Emmy nomination for her performance in HBO's special film of Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill in the year 2016. The Bite was a six episode drama about pandemics produced through Spectrum Originals in collaboration with CBS Studios. McDonald was U.S. prosecutor Liz Lawrence in the first episode of her role appeared in CBS's The Good Wife legal drama in 2009. The role was reprised in the year 2018, playing season regular Liz Reddick in Paramount+'s The Good Fight. In recognition of the role she played, McDonald received three Critics Choice Award nominations. The actress is currently a guest on Julian Fellowes' historical thriller The Gilded Age on HBO.
